The story in the Daily News:
The city’s crime rate for the first three months of 2009 was the lowest in more than 40 years, defying fears that the sinking economy might send the city back into the bad old days of rampant murders and rough streets.
Through the end of last month, overall crime dropped 13.5% from a year ago – down in every major category, including homicides, with 89, according to daily crime statistics from police. Last year, there were 116 homicides during the same period.
Robberies were also down from 4,837 last year at this time to 4,131 this year, and grand larcenies dropped from 10,030 to 8,854.
“I know there’s an anticipation … that crime would go up as a result of the economic turndown. We just haven’t experienced that,” Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Friday.
I have seen in the past where crime has been up in in VT in bad economic times. I have not seen it get bad this time…..yet. I’ve seen crime get worse when things are good too. This time it seems to be different. Of coarse I have not seen the any stats yet either. Only from what is happening in out department.
I’m generally of the belief that the link between crime and the economy is overrated.
People don’t commit crime because they’re poor; they commit crime because they’re criminals.
That being said, being poor and criminal is a bad combination.
I can’t wait for the fudged numbers of the NYPD Comp-stat to be exposed…
See my next post.
I agree with PCM…it's because when your bad your just bad. It's in really rare cases that people commit crime from economic desperation.
I think the inner workings of a police department is something that many people will never really understand.
The crime index for 2006 was 108, 105 for 2007, and 103 for 2008. Looking like a good trend to me.
But I don't believe the crime index. When crime was high, the index was probably low because of unreported crime. When crime is low, the index is probably down because of pressure to keep the stats low. I don't think the numbers are comparable over time.
I believe homicides. They're down.
its all bs its all for money everybody moved out in the 80's because the crime rates are correct nyc's crime rates are still high but the government wants money and nyc has one of the most expensive places to live so they lower the crime rates by fuckin up the statistics lying mother fuckers
