Newt Gingrich and Pat Nolan in the Washington Post on the need for less prison.
We urge conservative legislators to lead the way in addressing an issue often considered off-limits to reform: prisons.

Wow, I'm in shock that I actually agree with Gingrich on an issue
You know, incarceration rates are at an all time high.. And crime in most urban areas is back to the pre-crack levels of the 80s……….
Maybe the high incarceration is helping?
I think a lot of us in the academic community have long known Newt Gingrich to be an intelligent yet flawed man who allows ambition to compromise his knowledge and analytic ability.
Increased incarceration can be correlated with anything, but linking it with decreased crime doesn't hold up.
The incarceration rate increased during the 1980s and crime went up. Did increased incarceration cause crime to go up during that decade? How about the Boston Red Sox winning the World Series? Anything could be correlated with incarceration because it's gone up so long.
Better to look at NYC. The biggest crime drop and the incarceration rate has gone done. I don't think the two have much to do with each other.
Newt disappoints me more often than not. But at least, unlike other Republicans, he doesn't think a college education and being an intellectual are bad things. He's a thinking man — at least on a good day. You might just hit the nail on the head: "an intelligent yet flawed man who allows ambition to compromise his knowledge and analytic ability."
