This article sounds very familiar to ones in the NYT in the early and mid 80’s regarding Colombians in south Florida and NY. Everyone was going to end up with a “Colombian neck tie.” I hate seeing people hurt or killed, but this is a violent money-making business. These guys know that going in.
I don’t see this so called trend as a sign of any change in the “drug war,” but as one sub-group’s ignorance of the fact that violence is bad for business in the U.S. It brings too much unwanted attention.
It could also be an example of the media’s tendancy to lump any crime involving a certain group into whatever has been designated as the flavor of the day. A couple of years ago these crimes probably would have been linked to Latino gangs, the fear of which sold papers for a short time.
The article sounds to me like the media using lower level drug robberies to back up their case that Mexican drug cartels will be kidnapping and killing little Joey and Jane in your town soon. Talk about yellow journalism.
