I don’t know what made me think of this website just now. I first saw it years ago and it just crossed my mind for some reason. It has nothing to do with police or Baltimore.
This woman rode around the abandoned Chernobyl area with nothing but a motorcycle [Ed note: kind of sort of. See comments below], a camera, and a giger counter.
I guess it does sort of remind me a bit of parts of the Eastern.
Abandonment. People used to live here. The pictures are incredible and strangely moving.
This is actually a bit of a hoax. She actually traveled to Chernobyl on a paid bus tour, and took along her motorcycle equipment to make it look like she’d ridden there herself. It was exposed maybe a year and a half ago.
On the other hand, if you read this text as the story of “Chernobyl as a wasteland” and not as the story of “Elena the motorcyclist,” then the story is one that rings with narrative truth. That’s how Elena is spinning it, and we as autoethnographers are probably best off viewing it through that lens.
Thanks! I read about the hoax talk a bit and couldn’t figure out what was hoaxed. I mean, the pictures speak for themselves.
Yeah, I’m much more into it for the Chernobyl part than for the Elena as bad-ass chick part.
I hope you can finish up soon. I admire your enthusiasm though.
