We in American don’t know about “traveler” culture in Ireland and England.
Now I know it’s wrong, but I can’t help but have some respect for people who race horses, harness racing style, down major highways. The full youtube clip has been deleted (it was a long race). But here’s the shortened BBC version.

Maybe you wouldn't get much of a response if you asked someone about 'travellers', but you'd probably get a response of familiarity with 'gypsies', which seems to be how they're designated everywhere except Ireland itself.
How do you know about them? And are you implying that Americans should know about them?
I learned a lot about travellers by being with English police for a few month last fall.
You can't talk about rural crime without talking about travellers. That was new to me, as an American.
And I know travellers are *called* gypsies (and worse), but I don't like using the word gypsies for travellers because I'm part gypsy (my father's grandmother) and not part traveller. Travellers are a different group. And in the US, gypsy is understood as Roma gyspy.
