Fewer Prisoners, Less Crime

While the prison population keeps going up, not many know that in some states it’s going down. Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, and New York have reduced their prison populations by five to twenty percent since 1999 (without any increases in crime) while the national prison population increased by another twelve percent.

  1. that's fascinating. My main experience with The Sentencing Project is in felony disenfranchisement, I had no idea their work was so broad.

  2. It's funny how these numbers were never brought up when New York State was busy gutting their anti-drug laws a few months ago. One of the main arguments was, "our prisons are bursting at the seams!!!"
