  1. is this an open thread where we can post about police stories that pop up this month?

  2. Well, since he's not here I guess we can run amok and treat it like an open thread.

Enjoy your vacation Peter (well, hopefully it's a vacation).

  3. Sure… go wild. I'll check in now and then to make sure everybody is behaving.

[Vacation? I happen to be Athens on top-secret undercover work infiltrating anarchists groups. Rumor has it they may be moving an operational cell to a beach on a nice Aegean Island in the next few days. I will investigate. I hear Greek anarchists like drinking ouzo and eating grilled octopus. I will do my best to fit in and not blow cover.]

  4. Lying police officer Patty Pogan gets no jail:

    cbsnews.com/stories/2010/07/14/national/main6677840.shtml

    typical popo.

  5. Oh, and Patrick was kind enough to thank his union for their help in securing this (non)sentence. I wonder how they helped exactly. Carrot or stick?

  6. Helluva time to a take a vacation, Pete, especially what with all this going on!

  7. Officers Eiseman and Carsey lie and plant (allegedly):

    nytimes.com/2010/07/16/nyregion/16cops.html

Not sure why these two were singled out for prosecution. seems unfair.

  8. The regcits are surprisingly angry at the police over the Las Vegas Costco shooting:

    8newsnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=12825846

They think the police are lying.

  9. Here is the LV sheriff explaining why there can be no answers about the Costco shooting until September at the earliest:

    weak

  10. This is a good time for an experienced, educated person like myself to assert the obvious: Cleanville wears a aluminum foil hat and struggles to stay employed at a boring day job of little consequence.

  11. This story is making the rounds because of the video:

    wiredprnews.com/2010/07/16/video-of-black-teens-arrest-leads-to-more-paris-texas-controversy_2010071612646.html

The part I think is interesting is that the assault part sounds made up, and it sounds like it was made up to provide cover for a false arrest where excessive force was used.

  12. Interesting patrol car crash photo:

    kcoy.com/Global/story.asp?S=12792890

The policeman seems to be okay

  13. Except for the Pogan case, all of the links posted by Cleanville Tziabatz(explain the name please), and other anonymous posters which are purported to "catch the police lying" seem to be cases that are still unresolved. Is there any additional information that makes the posters think these cases represent misconduct?
    Thanks,
    Ed

  14. Prof. O'Donnell speaks out against the h8'ers:

“There has been a spate of particularly brutal and senseless attacks on the police,” said O’Donnell, a former police officer and prosecutor in New York. “It seems to me, an unprecedented level of disrespect and willingness to challenge police officers all over the place.”

He said a rise in mental health problems and scathing criticism of police, such as the comments found on some blogs, could be fueling the brazenness and disregard for authority.

  15. More video on the Ramos crash:

    myfoxny.com/dpp/news/local_news/brooklyn/cop-in-court-in-collision-with-cyclist-20100720

Ramos said that he didn't think he hit Tong, but that may actually have been a lie.

Sadly, no charges for the partner.

  16. Anon,
Thanks for the additional video, P.O. Ramos pretty clearly hit the guy. The only thing I can say, and I think Ramos has said, is that maybe the guy who was hit said he was okay and didn't need an ambulance. That doesn't excuse them from calling an ambulance if the guy was obviously badly hurt.
Tough to defend this seemingly irrational decision by Ramos without getting into issues not understood by the general public and cop haters. I have to say though, that prosecuting Ramos for Assault is over-charging.
    Thanks,
    Ed

  17. Cleanville, you seem to be a well educated guy who believes that the police should perform flawlessly in every situation. You leave no room for human emotion or flat out error in police response.
I don't know where this expectation comes from. Until we invent robots who can enforce the law, we will have situations where cops don't perform perfectly. All we can do is improve screening of people interested in policing as a career and weed out people who don't seem to handle it well.
Did P.O. Ramos do wrong? Yes. Was he being reckless while driving his car? We don't know, but since this is the act underlying the assault charge, we need to know more before we put him in jail. Consequently, reckless driving is a charge that could be pursued against most drivers in mv vs pedestrian accidents, but it seldom happens, because the public retains the luxury of making mistakes.
Should Ramos do jail time for lying to investigators? If prosecuting people for perjury in N.Y. State was common practice, maybe. This case is not even perjury though, since there was never any court testimony. So, no.

If you can take a step back for a second… Although Ramos had a duty to report the accident, leaving the scene seems not to have injured Mr. Tong any further. Ramos did not lie in a situation that would deny anyone their liberty, he lied to save his own skin. Big difference, but still bad. So in my mind, Ramos' actions leading up to the accident are still unresolved (he had his emergency lights on for some reason), and Ramos' actions after the fact did not harm anyone further. Should he go to jail? No.
    Thanks,
    Ed

  18. Ah glorification of prison sodomy. How intellectual of you, Cleanville. You are not as bright and worldly as you think, little man.

  20. They have aluminum foil in prison, for sure, but the worry Cleanville will have is whether or not he gets to fashion his hats out of it.

  21. Police dishonesty caught on tape:

    kccn.tv/

This is interesting because it gives regular citizens a small window intow how policemen operate when they thing they aren't being watched. Perhaps more than any other police misconduct video that has come out in the past two years, this one really gets to the heart of what is wrong with modernday US policemen.

  28. Peter, don't let it go to your head, but I think some of your commenters have come to depend on you. I can see how it would happen.

  29. RIP Sean? You gotta be kidding me.

Cleanville does love an audience doesn't he? Cleanville, do you get involved in the debates on Carlos anti-police blog? If so, what name do you post under? I am guessing Rail Car Fan or akagoldfish. Am I right?

  30. I don't think I ever posted there. I follow his blog a little, but not as close as I used to follow yours when that was still active.

  31. Well since we are posting police stories…

Officer killed in a shootout while responding to a disturbance call.

  32. And this one…

Detective murdered while providing court security.

  33. And how about one that had a happy ending…

Police officer shoots a robbery suspect that tried to run him over.

  34. Back to the sad stuff…

  35. More heroic stuff…

    Cops rescue folks from fire.

  36. You see Cleanville, you are just an angry unhappy little man. You know deep down that you are not capable of the kinds of heroism or sacrifice that officers deal with daily. Instead you search the net for any kind of police story and twist it all around with your ridiculous criticisms.

Go do something worthwhile with yourself. I am sorry being a piss ant patent lawyer is so unsatisfying for you.

  37. Johnny, I've found the best thing to do when somebody comments too much is to simply ignore that person.

There are blogs out there that highlight bad police behavior. But my blog isn't it. Carlos Miller comes to mind. So does the Agitator. Both are good blogs.

Speaking of Carlos Miller, as some of you have, I can't help feel for the guy, despite his questionable attitude. I mean, taking pictures where he did isn't illegal. So says the authority. And yet security guards keep busting him for taking pictures.

Call me a anti-government right-wing militia, but I believe people should stand up against illegal abuse of authority. Taking pictures isn't my thing, but I'm not a photographer. If they told me I couldn't read on the subway, I could see myself getting a bit militant about that.

Why is everybody so harsh on the guy for taking pictures where it is allowed?
